Lab-Grown vs. Natural Diamonds: An Honest Guide
It's one of the most common questions we hear at the counter: should I choose a lab-grown or a natural diamond? There is no wrong answer, but there are real differences worth understanding.
What's the same
A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond. It has the same chemical makeup and the same hardness as a natural one, and you can't tell them apart by eye. Both are graded on the same 4Cs: cut, color, clarity and carat.
What's different
- Origin. Natural diamonds formed deep in the earth over billions of years. Lab-grown diamonds are created in weeks under controlled conditions.
- Price. Lab-grown diamonds cost significantly less for the same size and quality, which lets many couples choose a larger stone.
- Long-term value. Lab-grown diamond prices have fallen as production has grown, so they generally hold little resale value. Natural diamonds are rare and have a long track record as a store of value.
How to decide
If size and budget are your priority, lab-grown can be a great choice. If rarity, tradition and future value matter more to you, natural is the way to go. Either way, insist on a grading report and buy from a jeweler who tells you clearly which one you are getting.
