Jewelry Appraisals: When You Need One and Why It Matters

Table of Contents

An appraisal is a written document describing a piece of jewelry and estimating its value. It's the paperwork that matters most if a piece is ever lost, stolen or damaged, and many people don't realize theirs is out of date.

    When you need one

    • For insurance. Most insurers want an appraisal before they will schedule a valuable piece on a policy.
    • After a big purchase. Engagement rings, anniversary pieces and fine watches should be documented as soon as you own them.
    • For an estate. When jewelry is inherited or divided, an appraisal gives everyone a clear starting point.
    • When the old one is old. Gold and diamond prices change. An appraisal from years ago may leave you under-insured.

    Done in-house

Appraisals at Huntington Jewelers are done in-house, so your jewelry stays with us the whole time.

    What to bring

Bring the jewelry and any paperwork you already have, such as previous appraisals, receipts or diamond grading reports.

    A good habit

Keep a copy of your appraisal somewhere other than with the jewelry, and take clear photos of each piece. If anything ever happens, you will be glad you did.
